Tijdens Camp Liberty 2026 krijgt de Britse veldartillerie een prominente plek. De Garrison Artillery Volunteers komen naar het kampement om samen met de Rekwisieten Commissie Koninklijke Landmacht een Britse 25-pounder te bedienen en te demonstreren.
De Garrison Artillery Volunteers zijn een ervaren internationale living-historygroep die zich al ruim dertig jaar verdiept in de Royal Artillery van de twintigste eeuw. Hun Nederlandse afdeling, Het Garnizoen, richt zich onder meer op Britse en Canadese artillerie uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de bevrijding van Nederland.
Het kanon achter de bevrijding
De 25-pounder was tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog het belangrijkste Britse veldgeschut. Het kanon werd ontworpen om flexibel te kunnen worden ingezet en kon zowel als veldgeschut als in een directe rol tegen tanks worden gebruikt. Met de zwaarste lading kon het een bereik van ongeveer 12 kilometer halen.
Maar een 25-pounder was natuurlijk meer dan een stuk geschut. Om het kanon in actie te krijgen, moest een complete bemanning nauw samenwerken. Iedere kanonnier had een eigen taak bij het in stelling brengen, richten, laden en afvuren van het kanon. De commando’s moesten kloppen en het tempo lag hoog.
Juist dat onderdeel laat de Garrison Artillery Volunteers tijdens Camp Liberty zien. Bezoekers kunnen van dichtbij zien hoe de 25-pounder wordt aangevoerd, opgesteld en bediend volgens de historische geschutsdrill.
Een verhaal dat ook hier thuishoort
De Britse veldartillerie speelde een belangrijke rol tijdens de geallieerde opmars door Nederland. Een van de eenheden die tijdens Operation Market Garden actief was, was het 124th (Northumbrian) Field Regiment. Het regiment ondersteunde de opmars van XXX Corps en kwam tijdens de operatie ook in de omgeving van Sint-Oedenrode terecht.
Tijdens Camp Liberty worden onder meer het 69th Field Regiment en het 124th Field Regiment uitgebeeld door de Nederlandse afdeling van de Garrison Artillery Volunteers. Daarmee sluit hun demonstratie direct aan bij de geschiedenis van de regio die tijdens Camp Liberty centraal staat.
Te zien tijdens Camp Liberty
De 25-pounder maakt deel uit van het programma op de tankbaan. Daarnaast rijdt het kanon op zaterdag mee tijdens de Liberty Convoy, begeleid door historische dispatch riders.
Tijdens het scholenprogramma op donderdag en vrijdag vertellen de Garrison Artillery Volunteers bovendien over het kanon, de bemanning en de rol van de Britse veldartillerie tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

Garrison Artillery Volunteers Bring the British 25-Pounder to Life
During Camp Liberty 2026, British field artillery will have a prominent place. The Garrison Artillery Volunteers are coming to the encampment to operate and demonstrate a British 25-pounder together with the Rekwisieten Commissie Koninklijke Landmacht.
The Garrison Artillery Volunteers are an experienced international living-history group that has been studying the Royal Artillery of the twentieth century for more than thirty years. Their Dutch branch, Het Garnizoen, focuses among other things on British and Canadian artillery during the Second World War and the liberation of the Netherlands.
The Gun Behind the Liberation
The 25-pounder was the main British field gun during the Second World War. It was designed to be highly versatile and could be used both as field artillery and in a direct-fire anti-tank role. With the heaviest charge, it had a range of around 12 kilometres.
But a 25-pounder was, of course, much more than just a gun. Getting it into action required a complete crew to work closely together. Each gunner had a specific task when bringing the gun into position, aiming, loading and firing. Commands had to be precise and the pace was fast.
It is precisely this aspect that the Garrison Artillery Volunteers will demonstrate during Camp Liberty. Visitors will be able to see at close quarters how the 25-pounder is brought forward, set up and operated according to historical gun drill.
A Story That Belongs Here Too
British field artillery played an important role during the Allied advance through the Netherlands. One of the units active during Operation Market Garden was the 124th (Northumbrian) Field Regiment. The regiment supported the advance of XXX Corps and also reached the area around Sint-Oedenrode during the operation.
During Camp Liberty, the Dutch branch of the Garrison Artillery Volunteers will portray, among others, the 69th Field Regiment and the 124th Field Regiment. Their demonstration therefore connects directly with the history of the region at the heart of Camp Liberty.
