Op 17 september 1944 kwamen duizenden parachutisten van de Amerikaanse 101st Airborne Division neer in de omgeving van Son, Eindhoven, Veghel en Sint-Oedenrode. Hun opdracht was duidelijk: belangrijke bruggen en wegen veiligstellen en de opmars van de geallieerde grondtroepen ondersteunen tijdens Operatie Market Garden. De divisie werd daarmee in september 1944 een belangrijk onderdeel van de strijd om de bevrijding van deze regio.
82 jaar later komt de 101st Airborne Division opnieuw naar deze omgeving.
Dit keer komen er geen parachutisten uit de lucht, maar militairen die vandaag daadwerkelijk deel uitmaken van dezelfde beroemde divisie. Tijdens Camp Liberty verwelkomen we de 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Band, de militaire band van de huidige 101st Airborne Division.
De 101st Airborne Division leeft vandaag nog altijd voort onder haar bekende naam Screaming Eagles, met de tradities en het embleem van de divisie die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Europa vocht. De divisie noemt haar motto nog altijd “Rendezvous With Destiny”, de woorden die de eerste commandant William C. Lee in 1942 uitsprak bij de oprichting van de divisie.
Tijdens Camp Liberty wordt die verbinding op twee heel verschillende manieren zichtbaar.
Op vrijdag 18 september verzorgt een koperkwintet van de band de muzikale ontvangst van de gasten bij onze officiële herdenkingsceremonie. Tijdens de ceremonie klinken de volksliederen van de Verenigde Staten, het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Nederland. Daarmee staat de muziek letterlijk in dienst van het herdenken.
Op zondag 20 september verandert de sfeer. Dan komt een grotere formatie van de 101st Airborne Division Band naar het kampement voor een openbaar optreden. Een elfkoppige formatie met rockband en blazers staat dan van 15.00 tot 16.00 uur op het podium.
Zo ontstaat tijdens Camp Liberty een bijzondere verbinding tussen verleden en heden. De soldaten van de 101st Airborne Division die hier in 1944 vochten, zijn verdwenen uit het landschap. Hun divisie bestaat echter nog altijd. Vandaag dragen nieuwe militairen dezelfde Screaming Eagle, behoren zij tot dezelfde divisie en zetten zij haar tradities voort.

The Screaming Eagles Return to the Landing Zone
On 17 September 1944, thousands of paratroopers from the US 101st Airborne Division landed in the area around Son, Eindhoven, Veghel and Sint-Oedenrode. Their mission was clear: to secure key bridges and roads and support the advance of the Allied ground forces during Operation Market Garden. The division therefore became an important part of the battle for the liberation of this region in September 1944.
82 years later, the 101st Airborne Division is returning to the area.
This time, no paratroopers will be descending from the sky. Instead, soldiers who are serving in the same famous division today will be coming to Camp Liberty. We are delighted to welcome the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Band, the military band of the present-day 101st Airborne Division.
The 101st Airborne Division continues to carry its famous Screaming Eagles identity today, along with the traditions and insignia of the division that fought in Europe during the Second World War. The division still uses its motto, “Rendezvous With Destiny”, the words spoken by its first commander, William C. Lee, at the division’s formation in 1942.
During Camp Liberty, this connection between past and present will be brought to life in two very different ways.
On Friday 18 September, a brass quintet from the band will provide the musical welcome for guests at our official commemorative ceremony. During the ceremony, the national anthems of the United States, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands will be performed. In this way, music will quite literally serve the act of remembrance.
On Sunday 20 September, the atmosphere will change. A larger formation of the 101st Airborne Division Band will come to the encampment for a public performance. An eleven-piece line-up featuring a rock band and brass section will take to the stage from 3.00 to 4.00 pm.
Camp Liberty therefore creates a remarkable connection between past and present. The soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division who fought here in 1944 are no longer part of this landscape. Their division, however, still exists. Today, new soldiers wear the same Screaming Eagle, serve in the same division and carry its traditions forward.
